Plastering the inside walls and solar panels - Verputzen der Waende und die Solarkollektoren

Michael has now started to plaster the interior walls and they are in various stages of being finished, since they need some time to dry before more plaster is added. In the office/Eva's room he has played with pigments added to the plaster and the wall sconces will later be an indirect light source.
I love the look of the walls (they are massive) and I also love the rounded window walls. We can also add some design elements to the range hood, like little nocks in which we can place "things".

Inzwischen hat Michael mit dem Verputzen der Waende angefangen und es sieht sehr toll aus. Ich mag die abgerundeten Fensterwaende und die eingebauten Wandleuchten, die uns spaeter indirektes Licht geben werden. Die Waende sind einfach sehr massive und Michael sagt auch, dass es sehr ruhig ist :).
Manche Waende haben immer erst noch den ersten Putz und andere, wie der Eingang sind schon fast ganz fertig. In Eva's Zimmer/Buero hat Michael mit gelben Pigmenten im Putz gespielt und es gefaellt uns sehr gut.

The solar panels are now on the roof and are working and charging our batteries nicely. Should we find out that we need more power, we have enough space on our roof to add more.

Jetzt sind auch die Solarkollektoren auf dem Dach und funktionieren einwandfrei. Die Batterien sind jetzt staendig geladen und wir haben auch noch Platz auf dem Dach, um weitere Kollektoren hinzuzufuegen (fuer den Fall, dass wir mehr Strom benoetigen).

Long overdue update - Mal wieder etwas Neues

2 month since I posted the last update - sorry about that. But something about the snow and Michael having to shovel an awful lot (we do get more on the North Mountain than just 5 minutes down in the Valley) and therefore not having the time to really get ahead was part of it. The cold start for the heating system wasn't ideal and for James to develop the various heating circuits also took longer than anticipated. But finally now it's
done and the weather is much better. Michael has closed the walls in the bathrooms and he will now start plastering.

Jetzt ist es schon wieder 2 Monate her, dass ich hier etwas geschrieben habe. Michael war doch sehr viel mit Schneeraeumen beschaeftigt und wir haben auch feststellen muessen, dass iwr auf dem "Berg" mehr Schnee haben als nur 5 Minuten weiter unten im "Tal".Der Kaltstart
fuer das Heizungssystem war auch nicht ideal und James, der Klemptner, hat auch laenger gebraucht, um das ganze System zu installieren, aber es ist wohl klasse. Aber jetzt ist es fertig und Michael hat auch schon die Waende imBadezimmer fuer's Fliesen vorbereitet.

Ok, now I am caught up. These are the last pictures from Friday, while they were putting on the solar tubes onto the roof. They were supposed to finish yesterday and fill the first system with the water/glycol mixture and we are still waiting to get a phone call to see if this has happened.

Ok, jetzt sind wir wieder auf dem Laufenden! Dies sind die letzten Bilder vom Freitag, als sie die Soalrroehren auf's Dach gemacht haben. Sie sollten es gestern fertig stellen und das erste System mit Wasser/Glycol befuellen und wir warten noch auf den Rueckruf, ob es auch wirklich passiert ist.

In the last 2 weeks Michael and Alex were putting up the indoor walls and the main stairs while James was working on installing the hot water system, which is also our heating system. As far as I understand it, we are going to have 3 separate systems, which work together, but which are all controlled each by it own unit and by pumps with digital temperature controls, which alsoregulate the valves. The hot water tank is a 400 liter Stiebel Eltron solar hot water tank.

In den letzten 2 Wochen haben Michael und Alex die Innenwaende gestellt, sowie die Treppe, waehrend dessen James das Heiswasser - Heizungssystem installiert hat. Soweit wie ich das verstehe, haben wir 3 separate Systeme, die aber alle zusammen spielen. Jedes System wir durch seine eigene digitale Steuerung kontrolliert, die die Temperatur misst und und die Ventil oeffnet. Der Heisswassertank ist ein 400 l Stiebel Eltron Spezialtank fuer heisses Solarwasser.

The water tank is right next to the chimney and will eventually be inclosed by a plastered, rounded wall (with access door of course), which will hide it but which will also be our extra thermal mass for the passive solar heat.

Der Wassertank ist direkt neben dem Schornstein und wird in ein paar Monaten von einer geputzten Wand (mit Tuer natuerlich) umschlossen sein. Die wand wird also zum einen den Tank und die Elektronik verstecken, aber sie dient auch als Thermalemasse als die passive Solarheizung.

In the week of January 4th they put up the wind turbine and it works! She is charging our batteries and Michael can work with the power generated by it - Yeah! By the way the turbine is about 50 feet high.
In der Woche nach dem 4. Januar wurde die Windmuehle aufgestellt - und sie funktioniert und laed unsere Batterien - yipee! Michael kann den Strom auch schon fuer's Arbeiten benutzen! Die Windmuehle ist ca. 15.25 Meter hoch.

On the 28th we drove out, so the girls and I could see the house as well and to help Michael to clean up, so they could continue fresh into the new year. It looked great and we were surprised how warm it got once the sun shown on it - we have had a great day. We even opened all the windows :)

Am 28. sind wir 4 rausgefahren, damit die inder und ich auch mal das Haus sehen konnten und wir haben Michael beim Aufraeumen geholfen! Es sieht toll aus und wir waren angenehm ueberrascht, wie warm es wurde, als die Sonne drauf schien. Wir haben sogar alle Fenster geoeffnet!

Catch up - Aufholen

Obviously it has been a month since I posted updates - sorry, but after Christmas I was too lazy and then by January too busy. But here it goes now.
So before Christmas we closed the house in and then on January 4th (hindered from time to time by snow fall) they continued and I will start with how Michael left it before Christmas.

Offensichtlich ist es jetzt 1 Monat her, seit dem ich hier etwas geschrieben habe. Nach Weihnachten war ich zu faul und dann im Januar zu beschaeftigt. Am 4. Januar hat Michael dann mit dem Bauen weitergemacht und ich werde hier Euch erstmal zeigen, wie er es vor Weihnachten verlassen hat.

We have had quite the weather in December and I have to hand it to Michael he never let up when it wasn't absolutely necessary. He even slept in the little hut when it was -20 and worked the next day. He has pushed it almost to where he wants to be. They are hopefully finishing it up today and tomorrow! Fortunately it was warm enough in between to get the septic field finished and put down the power line for the wind turbine. Now it is frozen solid and we couldn't have done it anymore. The walls are closed as well, even though not all bales are dipped, clay is frozen. But the weather is too cold to have moisture penetrating the bales and we do have extra bales to exchanges some if we have to next spring. But so far Michael has learned a lot about the straw and if they don't get wet on the inside they are fine. So the goal is to be able to lock the house tomorrow. They are hoping to move the batteries into the house today or tomorrow and if it isn't windy they will also put up the turbine and put the hot water solar collectors on the roof and get them connected. It's supposed to by sunny and it would be nice to get the system fired up and have heating process starting. The last couple of weeks were quite tense and uncertain due to the weather but it might still work out. Michael even has the clay inside the house so he can finish the inside walls over the winter.

Was hatten wir nicht fuer ein Wetter im Dezember. Wirklich Hut ab vor Michael's Durchhaltevermoegen und puren Willen es winterfest zu bekommen. Er hat auch bei -20 in der kleinen kalten Huette geschlafen und hat draussen gearbeitet wo es vertretbar war. Zum Glueck war es auch zwischendurch wieder waermer und somit sind jetzt die Waende zu, das Abwasserfeld (-tank) ist drinnen und die Stromleitung von der Windmuehle zum Haus ist auch drinnen. Gestern haben sie noch die letzten Fenster und Tueren rein gemacht und auch die Verkleidung am Dach und den Fenstern gemacht. Bis morgen soll es winterfest und abschliessbar sein. Wenn es heute oder morgen windstill ist, wird die Turbine aufgestellt und die Heisswassersolarkollektoren kommen auf's Dach. Es soll sonnig sein die naechsten Tage und es waere nett, wenn des System sich anfangen koennte aufzuheizen.
Die letzten Wochen waren wieder ganz schoen angespannt in Bezug auf unsere Nerven und man fuehlt sich immer so hilflos dem Wetter ausgeliefert. Aber Michael hat auch den Lehm im Haus und kann dann somit im Januar und Februar die Waende von innen verputzen.

Last Saturday I was out with the girls again and Michael, Alex, Neil and Mike have made great progress. The attics are close and most of downstairs is closed as well. Aisha and Shereen got dirty and helped a bit.
Letzten Samstag war ich wieder mit den Maedels draussen. Michael, Alex, Neil und Mike haben grosse Fortschritte gemacht. Der Dachboden ist geschlossen und der Grossteil der untersten Etage ist ebenfalls fast ganz geschlossen. Aisha und Shereen haben sich dreckig gemacht und etwas geholfen.

More baling last Sunday - Weiterspielen mit dem Stroh

Last Sunday, Jason, Andrew and Blair joined Michael and myself to help us with more baling. This time we only took to the straight and easy walls and we made nice progress and this is what we looked like at the end of the day.
Am letzten Sonntag sind Jason, Andrew, und Blair mit mir rausgekommen, um uns wieter zu helfen. Dieses Mal haben wir nur einfache und unkomplizierte Strohballen reingemacht und sind gut vorrangekommen und waren schoen dreckig am Ende des Tages.

I was responsible for supplying the guys with the mud, so they could dip the bales before putting them in. It was a fun job.
Ich war fuer den Putz verantwortlich und hatte viel Spass beim Panschen. Zum Glueck hat Michael dafuer einen Zementmixer gekauft.

I would take the opportunity to also thank some people behind the scenes, who are not featured here in pictures but are equally essential to us. Thank you Jeanne, Roisin, Pam, Debbie and Irene for taking our girls in and looking after Aisha and Shereen on the weekend, so I could go out and concentrate on helping Michael build. Our girls always have fun at your houses and Michael and I really appreciate it!

Ich moechte mich auch sehr gerne bei den Frauen bedanken, die sich um unsere Toechter an den Wochenenden kuemmern, damit ich Michael konzentriert beim Bauen helfen konnte. The time is Saturday, last weekend, Debbie, Aisha and Shereen came out with me to help!
Both were doing what they could and did remarkably well!
Am letzten Samstag sind Debbie, Aisha und Shereen mit mir rausgefahren, um zu helfen. Beide haben gemacht, was sie konnten!

Debbie and I had the task to make the bales smaller, so they would fit in the wall behind the stair case. Due to code the steps need to be a certain width and in order to achive this, we had to make the bales smaller. Debbie and I learned quickly how to handle them and had blisters to prove our handy work. Thank you Debbie!
Debbie und ich hatten die Aufgabe, die Wand hinter der Treppe mit Strohballen zu fuellen. Da die Stufen auf Grund von Baubestimmungen eine gewisse Breite haben muessen, muessten wir die Wand duenner machen. Also hiess das, die Strohballen kleiner zu machen.

Last weekend we went ahead to insulate the roof. It was a lot of fun once Pam and I had worked out a system it was a lot of fun and it is very satisfying to see the progress.
Am letzten Wochenende haben wir das Dach isoliert (nicht alles geschafft, aber doch ganz viel). NachdemPam und ich uns eingefummelt haben, hat es sehr viel Spass gemacht.

Last weekend we continued to practice but this time we also dipped the bales in the mud (clay, lime and water) before they were put in between the studs. The frame on the floor is to give the bottom bale something to rest on and you can see how thick the walls will be.

Letztes Wochenende haben wir weiter geuebt und dieses Mal wurden die Strohballen in den Vorputz aus Lehm, Kalk und Wasser getaucht bevor sie zwischen die Holzbalken plaziert wurden. Der Rahmen am Boden gibt dem untersten Ballen Halt und man kann sehen wie dick die Waende sind.
James and Jason came with us to help out (thanks a lot - we really appreciate your help) and Alex (who is also working with Michael during the week) is placing the first dipped bale.
James und Jason haben uns geholfen (Vielen Dank - wir wissen es sehr zu schaetzen) und Alex, der mit Michael unter der Woche auch am Haus arbeitet, packt den ersten eingetauchten Strohballen rein.

By now the roof is done from the outside (pictures are to follow soon) and here I now have pictures of the process. There are also some more up close photos from the roof construction.

The first week of November finally had some "better" weather days and the roof rafters are on. It took 6 guys, rope and a lot of muscle to get them up there. In the meantime though, we have the wall for the car port and some of the roof overhang is done and even the plywood is on. Michael says that they are going to start to shingle tomorrow. Yeah! Unfortunately the camera is still with Michael and I wont be able to update the pictures before next Sunday.
I was out yesterday to help Michael and finally meet the crew! We tried out how to best rebale the straw in order to make them smaller and we did the first 3 bales and even put them in! More pictures to follow on Sunday! But it is a very nice feeling to stand in the house now and to get a sense as to how it will look. I love it!
In der ersten November-
woche hatte der Regen zeitweilig aufgehoert und somit konnten die Dacht-
rassen aufgesetzt werden. 6 Maenner, Seile und viel Muskelkraft haben sie schliesslich auf's Dach gebracht.
Inzwischen sind wir allerdings schon viel weiter. Die Car Port Wand ist fertig und Teile des Dachueberhanges sind auch fertig. Gestern haben sie auch schon das Dach mit Holz gedeckt und sie werden morgen mit den Dachziegeln anfangen. Yeah! Leider sind die ganzen Bilder noch in der Kamera und ich werde sie nicht vor Sonntag hochladen koennen.
Ich war gestern auch mal auf der Baustelle (wir hatten Feiertag) und somit konnte ich ein bisschen helfen und wir haben die ersten 3 Strohballen reingemacht. Wir mussten ueben, wie wir sie kleiner machen koennen, da wir am kommenden Samstag endlich mit dem Einfuellen der Strohballen anfangen wollen.
Es ist schon ein tolles Gefuehl jetzt im Haus zu stehen und einen Eindruck davon zu bekommen, wie es aussehen wird. Mir gefaellt es sehr gut!

After attempting to move the straw bales already a weekend before and it falling literally into the water, we now got the chance last Saturday with great weather to have the help of our friends again to move about 200 straw bales from our storage barn to the 2nd floor where Michael will need them very soon to fill the gaps in our walls :)
Nachdem wir schon vor 2 Wochen die Strohballen transportieren wollten und dieser Versuch im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes in Wasser fiel, hatten wir letzten Samstag das grosse Glueck, dass uns unsere Freunde beim Transportieren von ca. 200 Stroballen von der Scheune in die 2. Etage halfen. Michael wird die Ballen bald brauchen, um die Loecher in den Waenden zu fuellen :)
In the back we have James and Debbie and in the front next to Michael and myself we have Eunsoo, Goro and Naoko. Thanks so much guys, it was fun and went very fast with your help. Aisha and Shereen were at a birthday party at the time and had helped us for the first 1 1/2 hours.

This week we finally had some great weather and NO rain, so the 3rd floor (the attic) is done.

In order to insulate around the windows and have it looking nice, Michael came up with the idea to round out the interior walls right around the windows. So he came up with the idea (see pics above) for the space above the windows. At the sides of the windows he will just cut the straw bales round.

Rund um die Fenster muessen wir ja auch das Stroh habe, und der Platz ueber dem Fenster stellte eine Herausforderung dar. An den Seiten werden die Strohballen abgerundet nachdem sie drin sind und unter dem Fenster haben wir die Fensterbank. Da wir die Wand auch nach oben hin abgerundet haben wollen, hat sich Michael diese Loesung (siehe oben) einfallen lassen.

Now we are finally getting the idea as to how it will look when it's done and it is exciting to see the rooms appear in front of our eyes. From the drawings we stared at for so long to reality!

Jetzt bekommen wir so langsam eine Idee, wie das fertige Haus aussehen wird. Es istsehr aufregend zu sehen, wie die Raeume entstehen, nachdem wir sie so lange auf den Zeichnungen angeschaut haben.

The first floor (minus the straw bales) is done. It took about 7 days and 3-4 people to get here, which is very fast.
This is the north side of the house with the main entrance, which will eventually have the car port in front of it.

Die erste Etage ist fertig (ohne Strohballen). 3-4 Leute haben das innerhalb von 7 Tagen geschafft.
Das ist die Nordseite des Hauses. Um sie vor den Elementen zu schuetzen, kommt spaeter noch ein car port davor.

Hier kann man auch sehr gut die extra langen Traeger sehen, die aus Holz und Klebern hergestellt wurden (mir fehlt zur Zeit leider der korrekte deutsche Begriff dafuer). Es handelt sich hierbei um keine reinen Holzbalken, sondern um Holzstuecke, die unter starkem Druck mit Spezialklebern zu starken langen Traegern verarbeitet wurden, die sich im Laufe der Zeit auch nicht mehr verziehen. Diese Art von Tragern erlauben uns das offene Wohnkonzept zu realisieren.

Plywood over the rafters, so that they can built the walls for the second floor right on the second level. The floor for the second bathroom upstairs will be set a bit lower to accommodate in-floor heating.

Pressholzplatten wurden ueber die Traeger gelegt, damit die Waende fuer die 2. Etage gleich darauf gebaut werden koennen.
Der Fussboden fuer das 2. Badezimmer wird etwas tiefer gelegt, damit wir auch dort eine Fussbodenheizung haben koennen.

It's nice for me to see the pictures as well, since I always have to wait until Michael comes home, so I can download them :)

Jetzt wird endlich and den Waenden des 1. Stockwerkes gebaut. Ich freue mich auch ueber die Bilder, da ich immer warten muss, bis Michael nach Hause kommt, damit ich sie runter laden kann.

The distance between the studs is measured to fit the straw bales exactly, so the we can fill them into the empty spaces.

Der Abstand zwischen dem Holz ist nach den Abmassen der Strohballen bemessen, so dass diese genau dazwischen passen werden.

Michael is using tar paper to protect the wood from moisture and the stripes across the wood frame are the wind braces.

Michael benutzt die Dachpappe, um das Holz vor Feuchtigkeit zu beschuetzen und die Metallquerstreifen sind Windvertsaerkungen.

The first floor is done. Now we have to wait for the delivery of the floor joists and the roof tresses (some are 46 feet long and therefore are special fdelivery) to be able to continue. They are coming on Monday!

Das erste Stockwerk ist fertig. Jetzt warten wir auf die Fussboden und Dachbalken, um weitermachen zu koennen (manche sind 14 Meter land und somit eine Speziallieferung).

Yeah, yesterday we signed the mortgage pares with the bank - we good the great news from Kathy (thank you) on Monday evening at around 6 pm when we were already convinced it wouldn't work out anymore :)
Today, Michael is out again meeting with Matt to start the framing. Hoepfully the weather will hold to get the outside done before the frost.

Yeah, gestern haben wir endlich die Papiere mit der Bank unterzeichnet. Wir haben die gute Nachricht am Montag um 18 Uhr bekommen. Dabei waren wir schon ueberzeugt, dass es nicht mehr klappen wuerde.
Heute ist Michael auf dem Grundstueck, um mit Matt und seinen Leuten den Holzrahmen des Hauses anzufangen. Lasst uns hoffen, dass das Wetter haelt.

Unfortunately we are at the moment (since 2 weeks now a constant back and forth) waiting to come to an agreement with the bank for the financing and we are hoping to hear something definite this week.

Backfill and our lake - Einfuellen ums Haus und unser See

Right in front of our house we had a low lying, swampy area and I wanted a body of water for us to swim in and skate on (don't want to drive each time to do just that) and we needed back fill. So we had hoped that by digging up that swampy area, the water would come up from the ground, be deep enough and have lots of good soil with a high clay content.
Fortunately we got lucky. The pond is very big, about 6 feet deep and now we have lots of back fill and even more very good clay soil. Michael will be able to use it for the plastering of the straw bales.
I am very excited about this, because after one winter the lake will have a more organic shape and we can now also access the back of our property.

So ziehmlich nah an unserem Haus hatten wir eine tiefer gelegene Stelle, die auch sehr sumpfig war. Seit wir das Grundstueck gekauft hatten, hatte ich mir gewuenscht, dass wir eine Teich ausbuddeln koennten, in dem wir schwimmen und auf dem wir Schlittschuh laufen koennen. Ausserdem brauchten wir Fuellerde und viel Tonerde, um den Putz zu machen.
Wir hatten grosses Glueck. Der Teich ist knapp 2 Meter tief,wir haben viel Fuellerde und Michael ist sehr gluecklich mit der Qualitaet der Tonerde. Super geignet fuer den Putz.
Ich freue mich sehr darueber, da ueber den Winter sich die Teichumrandung aendern wird durch den Schnee und Regen und jetzt koenne wir auch mehr von unserem Grundstueck begehen und nutzen.

Sauna

One of our biggest wishes was always to have a sauna. Believe it or not, but rather than Michael building one eventually - we found a built one already on Kijiji. It is beautifully built and a lot of fun to use with the make shift shower and a fire place!

Einer unserer groessten Wuensche war es immer eine Sauna zu haben. Zu unserem grossen Glueck haben wir eine 2. Hand hier in Halifax gefunden. Somit kann sich Michael das Bauen sparen und sie ist sehr schoen gemacht und funktioniert auch einwandfrei!. Michael hat eine provisorische Dusche gebaut und eine Feuerstelle haben wir auch.

After a bit over 1 week we finally got the water at 67 feet! We measured, conservatively that we get about 15 Gallon per minute, but it is actually more like 22 Gallons per minute - so we will have plenty. It tastes so good - no taste at all!!!

Nach etwas ueber 1 Woche haben wir jetzt Wasser. Der Brunnen ist 20.5 Meter tief und wir bekommen ungefaehr 57 Liter die Minute, wenn wir ganz auf der sicheren Seite sein wollen. Im Allgemeinen bekommen wir mehr so um die 83 Liter pro Minute. Das Wasser schmeckt super - nach nichts!!!

Finally we received our straw bales. In 2 loads and each time an unloading of about 40 min we got about 520 bales.

Stem wall puzzel - Die Stuetzwand aus Naturstein

Our intention was to have a stem wall out of natural stone because it would keep the straw bales away from the rain splatter from the ground and the snow. So we set out to do this huge puzzel as to where to place each stone. Now the weather was super hot in this 2 weeks and the mortar always dried too fast, faster then Michael and I (at least a bit) could work. The stones were very hot, so they would suck up the water as soon as you put it on. The end result was that we had a very poorly bonded first row and we ran into trouble on the second row when stones that Michael had out on an hour ago just fell off. At this point we had spent 1 1/2 weeks on this and after a lot of frustration we decided it would be better and safer to change our plans and knock it down. It was VERY liberating and now Michaal has adjusted the plans to still protect the straw bales, by not doing the backfill as high as planned and to add some cement to the plaster to be used on the first couple of feet.

Die Natursteinwand sollte das Spritzwasser bei Regen und den Schnee von dem Stroh und dem Putz weghalten und es wuerde auch sehr huebsch aussehen. Also haben wir angefangen jeden Stein einzeln auszusuchen und zu platzieren. Allerdings waren diese 2 Wochen, die heissesten, die wir den ganzen Sommer ueber hatten und somit hat der Moertel viel zu schnell abgebunden und die heissen Steine haben immer gleich das Wasser verdampfen lassen. Also hatten wir am Ende die erst Reihe und etwas von der 2. Reihe, die sehr schlecht abgebunden hatte und nichts richtig hielt. Von der 2. Reihe sind uns einige Steine einfahc so runtergefallen. Also haben wir nach sehr viel Frustration aus Gruenden der Sciherheit und entschlossen, die Arbeit von 1 1/2 Wochen wied errunter zu reissen. Es war dann zum Glueck sehr befreiend.

Cleaning out the hay - Heuaufraeumaktion

In order to store our straw bales we had to clean out our barn from all the hay. Thankfully we have our tractor and so we all got a chance to drive it. Even though there is no picture of myself driving the tractor, I had a lot of fun using it. In this view of our property you will have the house further back behind you and you are looking towards Hamilton Rd. with 2 fields being created on the left.

Um unsere Strohballen unterbringen zu koennen, mussten wir in unserer Scheune Platz schaffen, also musste das ganze Heu raus. Zum Glueck konnten wir somit alle Traktorfahren lernen, was auch viel Spass macht und es hat maechtig bei der Arbeit geholfen. Der Blick im obersten Bild ist mit dem Haus im Ruecken aufgenommen und mit dem Blick auf die Hamilton Rd. Auf der linken Seite entstehen die beiden Gemuesefelder.

Aisha and Shereen wanted to help too, so the 2 devised a system with which they were able to manouver our wheel barrel.

Aisha und Shereen wollten auch helfen und somit haben sich die beiden beim Schubkarrenschieben geholfen und waren ziehmlich fix dabei.

But the most fun of all was actually driving the tractor (as much as they could - it does have hand operated speed and bucket control)!
After they had both started with it, they kept at it (taking turns each time) until we were done.

Aber der groesste Spass von Allem war das Tracktorfahren selber. Michael hat ihnen natuerlich geholfen, aber sie koennen beide schon sehr viel mit Hebelbetrieb machen, Gas geben und den Lader betaetigen. Nachdem sie einmal angefangen hatten hoerten sie erst wieder auf, als wir fertig waren.

The Well - Der Brunnen

When we arrived on August 10, they had finally started to pound our well in search of water. We had decided to go with the older slower method to pound our way through the rock instead of speed drilling it. We will most likely find water in a shallower depth and the water will be cleaner, since there isn't so much dirt as it would be if we power drilled through the rock. The noise of it was a constant companion during the day.

Als wir am 10. August auf dem Grundstueck ankamen, hat das "Durchschlagen" des Gesteines fuer den Brunnen auf der Suche nach dem Wasser begonnen. Es ist die aeltere langsamer Methode, aber dafuer werden wir wahrscheinlich in geringerer Tiefe Wasser finden und auch saubereres Wasser haben (nicht so viele Verunreinigungen vom Bohren).

The Slab - Die Betonplatte

The foundation is done. We were lucky with the weather (not too hot) and Micheal's dedication to keep it wet for the first 24 hours prevented us from having cracks in the slab. By now (it was poured on July 31) it has dried enough to walk on and we will have a nice view :). The next step is for us to build the stem wall from field stones, which will be about 2 feet high. This way we will be able to keep the snow and the moisture from the ground away from the plaster and the straw.

Das Fundament ist fertig. Wir hatten Glueck mit dem Wetter und es war nicht zu heiss. Michael hatte auch in den ersten 24 hrs nach dem Giessen dafuer gesorgt, dass der Beton schoen feucht bleibt und somit haben wir keine Risse. Jetzt werdern wir als naechstes die Natursteinaussenwand mauern, die ca. 62 cm hoch sein wird. Damit wollen wir den Schnee und die bodenfeuchte vom Stuck und dem Stroh abhalten.

Infloor heating system - Bodenheizung

This is a big part of the heat we are going to get from the sun. These floor pipes will be connected to the solar collectors on our roof to come and they run over the whole ground floor. In the winter though we will help out the sun with our wood burning cooking stove, which will heat up the water in the pipes as well.

Jetzt ist das Bodenheizungssystem drin, wekches dann mit den Sonnenkollektoren, die auf das Dach kommen verbunden wird. Im Winter werden wir dann mit unserem Holzkochofen dazuheizen, in dem der dann auch das Wasser in den Rohren erhitzt.

Since they are going to throw around with more concrete soon we decided to get the sonar tubes for the deck foundation in as well. So now Michael has prepared everything to be able to built a nice, large wooden deck next spring for us!

Infilled foundation - Fundament fast fertig fuer die Betonplatte

How different it looks now - most of the foundation has disappeared with the infill and it is ready for the plumber to do the underground plumbing. After that the inspector has to give his OK and then the concrete slab can be poured. Where you see the indent in the front corner of the house - this is where we will have a reinforced concrete slab to carry the chimney and the wooden stove.

Was fuer ein Unterschied, jetzt ist das Fundament gefuellt und wartet auf den Klemptner, um die Abwasserrohre und sonsiges zu verlegen. Dann kommt der Bauinspektor, gibt sein ok und dann kann die Platte gegossen werden.
Die Einbuchtung in vorderen teil des Hauses ist fuer die verstaerkte Betonplatte vorgesehen, da dort unser Schornstein und unser Holzofen/Holdherd stehen wird.

The framing for more pouring of the footing continues. We will be insulating the footing and therefore also the concrete slab (I think - Michael is the one with all the knowledge on this one). But they are pouring more concrete and it looks like we are going to have a basement, but we are not, it will be filled in with soil and gravel before they pour the slab.

Der Aufbau des Fundaments geht weiter. Es wird dann noch isoliert und anschliessend mit Erde und Steinen gefuellt, bevor die entgueltige Betonplatte gegossen wird. Merkt man, dass ich nicht so richtig die deutschen Fachbegriffe kenne :)? Da Michael immer nur mit den englischen Begriffen um sich rumschmeisst, bin ich hier etwas verloren.

In the meantime Michael has dug the trench for the power cable which will lead from our ordered wind generator "Whisper 200" to our house with his new toy - our tractor with a backhoe :)

In der Zwischenzeit hat Michael mit unserem neuen Spielzeug - ein Traktor mit Baggeranschluss - den Graben fuer das Strohmkabel ausgebaggert :) Von unserem bestelltem Windgenerator "Whisper 200" bekommen wir dann hoffentlich die meiste Zeit unseren Strom.
